2 Stage Pearl Paints
2 Stage Pearl Paints Explained:
You may or may not know when you purchased your vehicle, that it has in fact had a 2 stage paint job from factory! Roughly only 2% of cars have a 2 stage finish, often regarded as a luxurious upgrade to the typical paint finish.
Often referred to as a 2 or 3 stage paint job, this type of paint is usually more expensive and complex for a painter to match when refinishing. Unlike the traditional paint job, a 2 or 3 stage pearl has to be applied in multiple stages. Often the first layer is a solid colour, which is then followed by a 2nd layer of semi transparent pearl effect paint. The 3rd layer is usually just a reference to the clearcoat lacquer that acts as a top coat, which is applied to all cars, regardless of what type of paint is underneath.
Why have I received two bottles with my order?
As a paint supplier, we have to supply the customer with both paints, to replicate the original application process. The necessity to use the pearl top coat varies from colour to colour, as well as what type of damage it is being applied to. The 2nd bottle is supplied at no extra cost to the customer.
I am not sure what to do with the 2 bottles you have sent me?
With a 2 stage pearl colour, some degree of experimentation may be involved to get the results you desire. We cannot advise on exactly how to use it for each case, as this will depend on the colour, damage, and level of finish that you require. Sometimes the pearl coat may be so subtle, that it doesn't even need to be applied when touching in. With other colours, it may be a more significant stage that noticeably must be used.
Option 1: You can apply the two paints separately, leaving time to dry between coats (Ground coat/s first, followed by the 2nd coat of Pearl over the top).
Option 2: Mix some pearl into the ground coat and apply in one application.
Summary:
We think 2 Stage paints look awesome under various lighting conditions with an unrivalled depth of metallic shimmer. However, working on them can be challenging and often harder to get perfect results.
